Beer, Spirits, & Wine – Packaged Imports Grow +7.70% By Value Over Last Twelve Months through March 2019, Packaged Exports Decline -14.9%

Total Beverage Alcohol:

  • Total beverage alcohol imports (including bulk and packaged) grew +6.80% by value over the last twelve months and grew +5.10% by value over the last three months. 25.1% of all imported beverage alcohol by value came from Mexico over the last twelve months.

 

  • Total beverage alcohol exports (included bulk and packaged) declined -10.8% by value over the last twelve months and declined -46.3% by value over the last three months. 23.0% of all exported beverage alcohol by value went to Canada over the last twelve months.

  • Imported beer grew +2.80% by volume and grew +3.90% by value over the last twelve months. Over the last three months imports declined -0.900% by volume and declined -0.200% by value. 68.0% of imported beer by value comes from Mexico.
  • Exported beer declined -11.4% by volume and declined -0.300% by value over the last twelve months. Over the last three months exports declined -48.9% by volume and declined -23.4% by value. 19.5% of exported beer by value goes to Chile.

  • Imported packaged spirits for the last twelve months grew +6.40% by volume and grew +14.4% by value. Over the last three months volumes grew +10.3% and grew +18.8% by value.
  • Imported bulk spirits for the last twelve months grew +1.90% by volume and declined -2.40% by value. Over the last three months volumes declined -7.10% and declined -5.70% by value.
  • 9% of all imported packaged spirits by value arrived from France while 50.8% of all imported bulk spirits by value arrived from Brazil.
  • Exported packaged spirits for the last twelve months declined -55.8% by volume and declined -22.4% by value. Over the last three months volumes declined -57.2% and declined -48.4% by value.
  • Exported bulk spirits for the last twelve months grew +2.80% by volume and declined -7.60% by value. Over the last three months volumes declined -17.3% and declined -51.8% by value.
  • 8% of all exported packaged spirits by value is destined for Canada while 22.0% of all exported bulk spirits by value is destined for Canada.

Wine:

  • Imported packaged wine for the last twelve months grew +0.400% by volume and grew +3.20% by value. Over the last three months volumes grew +4.30% and declined -1.20% by value.
  • Imported bulk wine for the last twelve months declined -12.8% by volume and declined -14.5% by value. Over the last three months volumes grew +0.700% and declined -16.4% by value.
  • 4% of all imported packaged wine by value arrived from France while 22.9% of all imported bulk wine by value arrived from New Zealand.
  • Exported packaged wine for the last twelve months declined -20.0% by volume and declined -16.8% by value. Over the last three months volumes declined -46.4% and declined -46.0% by value.
  • Exported bulk wine for the last twelve months grew +4.60% by volume and grew +1.00% by value. Over the last three months volumes declined -13.4% and declined -19.2% by value.
  • 4% of all exported packaged wine by value is destined for Canada while 57.1% of all exported bulk wine by value is destined for United Kingdom.

First Quarter Beverage Alcohol Trends

The beverage alcohol market slowed in the first quarter with overall servings of Beer, Wine, and Spirits only being up +0.1% over the last three months and up +1.1% over the past twelve months.  Spirits is showing good growth over twelve months ending March 2019 with volume growth of +3.7%.  Beer and Wine are relatively flat for the same period.

Legal drinking age population is up +1.03% over the last twelve months so per capita consumption is relatively flat.  This is consistent with trends over the last 15 years where Total Beverage Alcohol servings are up 20.7% while the Legal Drinking age population has increased by 19.6%.

Consumer spending has performed better than servings with spending up +2.8% over the past twelve months. This consists of only +1.1% growth in off premise spending but +5.1% growth in on premise spending.  Total wholesale revenue growth is estimated at +1.0% with on premise operators expanding margins to offset expense increases such as labor, which is up +5.9%.

Trends in beverage alcohol are similar to overall trends in consumer spending.  Over the last twelve months consumer spending has increased to $14.34 Trillion, +4.4%.  Services have grown to $9.94 Trillion, +5.1% which includes on premise beverage alcohol sales.  Food and beverages, which are part of the non-durable goods segment have grown to $1.01 Trillion, +2.1%.

• Imported packaged spirits for the last twelve months are +7.9% by volume and +10.4% by value over. Over the last
three months volumes are +13.5% and +17.8% by value.

• Imported bulk spirits for the last twelve months are +14.3% by volume and +34.1% by value over. Over the last
three months volumes are +32.9% and +39.3% by value.

• Exported packaged spirits for the last twelve months are +14.3% by volume and -87.1% by value. Over the last
three months exports are -1.1% by volume and -9.3% by value.

• Exported bulk spirits for the last twelve months are -36% by volume and -12.7% by value. Over the last three
months exports are -64.6% by volume and +154.3% by value.

• Over the last twelve months, France comprised 26.02% by value of all imported spirits (packaged and bulk) into
the U.S. while comprising 0.41% by value of all exported U.S. spirits (packaged and bulk).

• Spirits (packaged and bulk) is 52.38% of TBA imports from France and 16.58% of TBA exports to France by value.

Wine:

• Imported packaged wine for the last twelve months are +6.3% by volume and +13% by value over. Over the last
three months volumes are +0.2% and +5.5% by value.

• Imported bulk wine for the last twelve months are +18.8% by volume and +33% by value over. Over the last three
months volumes are -17.8% and +11.5% by value.

• Exported packaged wine for the last twelve months are +18.8% by volume and +3.1% by value. Over the last three
months exports are +111.7% by volume and +52% by value.

• Exported bulk wine for the last twelve months are +50.6% by volume and +71.8% by value. Over the last three
months exports are +38.2% by volume and +45.7% by value.

• Over the last twelve months, France comprised 32.02% by value of all imported wine (packaged and bulk) into the
U.S. while comprising 5.04% by value of all exported U.S. wine (packaged and bulk).
